In concert with my students, I explore how Black children’s interactions within their families, peer groups, communities, and schools may buffer the deleterious impacts of experiencing racism and discrimination by providing Black children with agentic, adaptive coping strategies.
By drawing insights from developmental psychology, education, and Black studies, my work is impactful, innovative, and inclusive; and my deep, meaningful collaborations with researchers as well as Black youth, adolescents, and their caregivers across the United States underscore this commitment. Since attaining my Ph.D., I have received multiple awards in research (e.g., the Outstanding Research Award (2022) for research excellence from Ball State University and the Gabriel Carras Research Award (2023) from NYU for promising young scholars), as well as the Outstanding Teaching Award (2021) for teaching excellence from Ball State University. In January 2024 I was awarded the 2024 Diverse Issues in Higher Education Emerging Scholar Award. This awardrecognizes 15 scholars “who represent the very best of the U.S. academy.” As of October 2024, I have published 22 peer reviewed manuscripts, 7 book chapters, and 5 research reports in well-known psychology and education journals and/or widely accessible publication outlets, such as the Review of Research in Education, Journal of Adolescent Research, and the Journal of Black Psychology.
